Reese Witherspoon Plays Coy After Teasing A "Hello Sunshine Project Cooking" With A Real Housewife: "I Can't Say Anything"
“I will not NOT be rich!” If there’s one thing you picked up from Big Little Lies Season 2 Episode 2, it was undoubtedly this line from Laura Dern‘s Renata. Renata’s world may be crumbling around her through no fault of her own — thanks, Gordon — but the meaty storyline is giving Dern a chance to shine, and fans have taken notice. On Sunday night, Twitter filled up with memes about Dern’s now-iconic line read, with many calling for her Emmy right here and now. As one fan said, “‘I will not, NOT be rich’ might be the greatest line ever uttered in a TV series.”
Big Little Lies Season 2 has already proven itself to be a GIF machine, but Sunday’s episode, “Tell-Tale Hearts,” took things to a new level of meme-ability. Early in Episode 2, Renata’s husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) is arrested for some sort of financial crime (insider trading? securities fraud? I don’t work at Goldman Sachs, don’t ask me these questions). Renata goes to visit Gordon in jail, where he explains that her money is “community property” and can therefore be seized alongside his own. “Gordon, I’m not gonna not be rich,” says Renata. He gives her a B.S. line about how “this could be a positive thing,” and she full-on explodes.
“I will not NOT be rich,” says Renata, stabbing at the glass partition with each word. She slams the phone and storms out, as she should.
Fans wasted no time before praising Dern’s impressive performance. “What Laura Dern is doing in Big Little Lies is bloody extraordinary,” wrote one viewer. “I don’t feel empathy for wealthy people and their wealthy ass problems. But, I’m upset for Renata!!!” added another. “Laura Dern is just delicious in this role,” wrote one fan, highlighting a moment later in the episode where Renata flips the bird out of her Tesla sunroof and yells, “Will somebody give a woman a moment?”

Reese Witherspoon even got in on the fun, adding, “Laura Dern you are EVERYTHING in this episode.”

As always, Madeline Martha Mackenzie is correct. Laura Dern, you are EVERYTHING.
